Step Twelve: Carrying the Solution to Others

“Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” (A.A. Big Book pg. 60)

“Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics. It works when other activities fail. This is our twelfth suggestion. Carry this message to other alcoholics! You can help when no one else can.”

-A.A. Big Book pg. 89

When Bill W. went to speak to Dr. Bob after his failed business adventure in Akron, Ohio in the spring of 1935, he didn’t go to see him with the intentions of getting Dr. Bob sober. His intentions were to keep himself from drinking. The two talked for over six hours and the genesis of Alcoholics Anonymous commenced.

Over my years in AA I have come to value and appreciate the “Carrying of the message” to the still suffering alcoholic as the backbone of my spiritual growth. No truer words were ever written; “Practical experience shows that nothing will so much insure immunity from drinking as intensive work with other alcoholics. It works when other activities fail.” It has saved my life more than once.

P.S. Step Twelve;  Described on pages 89 – 103 & 567 – 568 (The directions for taking Step 12 are on page 89, para. 1, lines 1-7. The instructions on how to carry the lifesaving message of recovery can be found throughout pgs. 89-103)

I welcome your questions, your ideas for recovery topics or perhaps a personal story or two. Don’t forget, a dose of good humor about recovery or addiction is always welcomed…it has certainly helped me and many others through some tough times!
